Man it's on like Donkey Kong
Was unable to post for quite awhile through the pick fo Darrius Heyward-Bey, then stayed in the theater following Tom Cable’s press conference from for a conference call from the top pick.
Transcriptions will follow later, but some observations (hopefully before the system crashes again):
– I said a number of times the last few days I’d believe Darrius Heyward-Bey when I saw it. My rationale? I thought it was simply a stereotype of Al Davis’ need for speed.
I stand corrected. The last time I saw a reach this long, Thomas Hearns was a 6-foot-2 welterweight.
– Never underestimate the Raiders ability to stand behind their pick.
Cable said this was the guy they wanted all along _ the guy they targeted a month ago.
He said he was worried somebody would trade up to get him.
He said if Heyward-Bey had played in a spread offense, he would have scored 50 touchdowns (a reference to Michael Crabtree’s 41 touchdowns over the past two years.
He compared Heyward-Bey, who had 42 catches for 609 yards and four touchdowns, to Randy Moss (presumably the Vikings-Patriots Randy Moss, and not the Raiders Randy Moss).
– As for Heyward-Bey’s inconsistent hands, Cable said those issues were alleviated by watching him work out.
– The beauty of all these claims, of course, is that Crabtree was drafted by the 49ers at No. 10, making for a delicious side-by-side comparison over the next few years. In 2012, Cable is going to look like genius or he’ll be a line coach somewhere.
– Heyward-Bey, by the way, seems like an earnest, hardworking young man. He sounded nothing like a diva, said he modeled his work ethic after Jerry Rice and is confident his skills will translate into bigger stats at the NFL level.
He said he never worried about his status in college, believing wins far outweighed any numbers he accumulated.
