View Full Version : Raiders need to learn from Ozzie Newsome
When a talented player unexpectedly falls into the Ravens lap on Draft Day Ozzie Newsome almost always takes advantage and this year may be yet another classic example. In fact, there are a number of top talents who could conceivably fall to the latter part of round one but few would be a better fit than Darrius Heyward-Bey. Physically there aren’t any wideouts in this draft more impressive than “DHB”, who checks in at just under 6-2, 210 pounds Darrius Heyward-Bey | Maryland Terps and ran a blistering 4.30 forty at the Scouting Combine. Heyward-Bey is still a bit raw but he has the potential to be the true #1 receiver in time. Others who the Ravens would probably love to see still on the board here are right tackle Eben Britton, inside linebacker Rey Maualuga, who would be an absolutely perfect fit alongside Ray Lewis, and tight end Brandon Pettigrew. Expect the unexpected with Baltimore though because by and large Newsome stays true to his draft board and they will likely opt for the "best player available".

You ever just read something and something that has been pretty known for quite some time goes over your head. And it doesn't hit you until much later..
Well, I just had one of these moments.
And, wow, has anybody really drafted better than Ozzie Newsome???
Jeez..... he always seems to pick some studs.

Always have admired how the Ravens draft. If only our FO would get a clue...

Defensively, he always finds studs in the draft, especially in the first couple of rounds. However, the offense is an entire different story.
Still, I agree with how he evaluates the draft; i've been screaming from site to site that we need to target the best player available, regardless of what may be more of a need.

I think it's different on a team by team basis.... Ravens usually pick towards the bottom half of the draft... Teams that low usually have less gaps to fill and have "luxury" picks....
I commend Newsome for staying true to his board though.

Well the Ravens have picked in bottom of the draft as well (2006) and they still took BPA.
Regardless of where you are drafting, early on you should always take BPA. You cannot simply reach for need early.

I think I might have communicated it worng..
I was actually talking about the Ravens and how they always pick towards the lower end of the draft.
And as far as drafting BPA I feel it is done in reverse... You look for BPA later.

But you have to give hime his props regardless.. He sent many of his picks to the probowl year after year

In the first two rounds (depending on the team's situation) you draft the best talent available regardless; you use the later rounds to solidify needs. When you draft on the purse basis for need for a 5-11 team, you are going to get burnt.

As good as Ozzie is, don't undervalue how good his pro personnel director was (current GM of the Browns).

I agree Bump all of the top teams in the NFL have a top front office. We have Al and all you have to do is look at the results of the past 6 seasons to see where our major problem is.

We don't even draft for need we draft who Al wants! :csa:

He has drafted an all pro TE, a first ballot HOF LT among some other decent linemen, Grubbs looks like a stud. And he also drafted Priest Holmes if Im not mistaken.
Did he also draft Jamal Lewis?
So his offensive track record for a defensively geared team is not bad at all IMO.

So Newsome is high on Heyward Bey that is a good thing cuz that is who is rumored to be the Raider's 7th round pick.

Priest Holmes didn't do caca until he went to KC.
QB, WR, and other skill positions are still problematic for Baltimore. Their offense for several years has been beyond horrendous..

Priest Holmes was undrafted.
He took Jamal Lewis at pick 5, and Todd Heap was a steal at pick 31. They draft good lineman, but their skill position drafting on the offensive side of the ball has always been questionable IMO. There's no doubt they draft defense like no other franchise, though. Any team would love to have a defense like theirs.

He still scouted Holmes and brought him in. But Gen was correct, Holmes didn't do squat until he went to KC...
Which alludes to system being a factor!!
Baltimore is geared around their D and a ball control Offense
