Ain't that the fuckin' truth Jeff.. I hope we shock the hell outta the Chargettes, but man, it could very well be an epic beatdown.. You going to the game or to a local bar? Bandwagon Chargette fans will be out in full force I'm sure..

And yep, Andrew looked good.. He still needs to get his legs back, but he's just a goddamn beast in there.. And Lamar looked as good as ever, like the fact he's continued to stroke the 3-ball nicely.. Still weird to see Artest out there, but he played decent.. Just needs to hit those open shots, but overall a pretty good game..

And really haven't heard or read anything on Pau.. I listen to KLAC 570 online every day, so if there's any news they should have it..

Stephen Curry is going to be a good player. From what I heard about him, dude is mature, unselfish, and is high-quality in character. 14 point, 7 assists, and 4 steals? Not bad for his first game.

Anthony Morrow better be put in the 3-point contest at the All-Star game.

Anthony Randolph is another one that I am really fond of. Dude played his heart out. Hitting that 3 at the end of the 1st half was sweet.

But we need better defense overall. You can't win on offense alone.

Why is bump talking shit because of the Celtics?

This dude is smart enough to know the Lakers and Celtics are 2-2 in the modern era. The Celtics beat the Lakers in the Finals during the 50's and 60's, an era with no competitive balance. There was little in terms of spread talent until the late 70's.

That said, the Lakers have been the best organization in basketball since 1980. They've completely dominated 2 decades since, and while Boston did win a title in 08, their organization has been silent most of those years. You can't blame the Lakers for Boston spending 20 years out of the Finals. And with a more balanced league, going to the Finals as often as the Lakers and Celtics did way back when is basically impossible.

And the Blazers have one god damn title so what are you reminding yourself of?

From TIM DONAGHY

If a player of Kobe's stature collides with the likes of Raja Bell, the call will almost always go for Kobe and against Bell. As part of our ongoing training and game preparation, NBA referees regularly receive game-action video tape from the league office. Over the years, I have reviewed many recorded hours of video involving Raja Bell. The footage I analyzed usually illustrated fouls being called against Bell, rarely for him. The message was subtle but clear-call fouls against the star stopper because he's hurting the game.

If Kobe Bryant had two fouls in the first or second quarter and went to the bench, one referee would tell the other two, "Kobe's got two fouls. Let's make sure that if we call a foul on him, it's an obvious foul, because otherwise he's gonna go back to the bench. If he is involved in a play where a foul is called, give the foul to another player."

Similarly, when games got physically rough, we would huddle up and agree to tighten the game up. So we started calling fouls on guys who didn't really matter-"ticky-tack" or "touch" fouls where one player just touched another but didn't really impede his progress. Under regular circumstances these wouldn't be fouls, but after a skirmish we wanted to regain control. We would never call these types of fouls on superstars, just on the average players who didn't have star status. It was important to keep the stars on the floor.

Allen Iverson provides a good example of a player who generated strong reaction, both positive and negative, within the corps of NBA referees. For instance, veteran referee Steve Javie hated Allen Iverson and was loathe [sic] to give him a favorable call. If Javie was on the court when Iverson was playing, I would always bet on the other team to win or at least cover the spread. No matter how many times Iverson hit the floor, he rarely saw the foul line. <----- woooooohooooo ???? ALLEN IVERSON > KOBE ANYONE????

The 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings presents a stunning example of game and series manipulation at its ugliest. As the teams prepared for Game 6 at the Staples Center, Sacramento had a 3–2 lead in the series. The referees assigned to work Game 6 were Dick Bavetta, Bob Delaney, and Ted Bernhardt. As soon as the referees for the game were chosen, the rest of us knew immediately that there would be a Game 7. A prolonged series was good for the league, good for the networks, and good for the game. Oh, and one more thing: it was great for the big-market, star-studded Los Angeles Lakers.

In the pregame meeting prior to Game 6, the league office sent down word that certain calls-calls that would have benefitted the Lakers — were being missed by the referees. This was the type of not-so-subtle information that I and other referees were left to interpret. After receiving the dispatch, Bavetta openly talked about the fact that the league wanted a Game 7.

"If we give the benefit of the calls to the team that's down in the series, nobody's going to complain. The series will be even at three apiece, and then the better team can win Game 7," Bavetta stated.

As history shows, Sacramento lost Game 6 in a wild come-from-behind thriller that saw the Lakers repeatedly sent to the foul line by the referees. For other NBA referees watching the game on television, it was a shameful performance by Bavetta's crew, one of the most poorly officiated games of all time.

Bump
10-29-2009, 03:02 PM
The 2002 series certainly wasn't the first or last time Bavetta weighed in on an important game. He also worked Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Trail Blazers. The Lakers were down by 13 at the start of the fourth quarter when Bavetta went to work. The Lakers outscored Portland 31–13 in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game and the series. It certainly didn't hurt the Lakers that they got to shoot 37 free throws compared to a paltry 16 for the Trail Blazers.

Two weeks before the 2003–04 season ended, Bavetta and I were assigned to officiate a game in Oakland. That afternoon before the tip-off, we were discussing an upcoming game on our schedule. It was the last regular-season game we were scheduled to work, pitting Denver against San Antonio. Denver had lost a game a few weeks prior because of a mistake made by the referees, a loss that could be the difference between them making or missing the playoffs. Bavetta told me Denver needed the win and that it would look bad for the staff and the league if the Nuggets missed the playoffs by one game. There were still a few games left on the schedule before the end of the season, and the standings could potentially change. But on that day in Oakland, Bavetta looked at me and casually stated, "Denver will win if they need the game. That's why I'm on it."

I was thinking, How is Denver going to win on the road in San Antonio? At the time, the Spurs were arguably the best team in the league. Bavetta answered my question before it was asked.

"Duncan will be on the bench with three fouls within the first five minutes of the game," he calmly stated.

Bavetta went on to inform me that it wasn't the first time the NBA assigned him to a game for a specific purpose. He cited examples, including the 1993 playoff series when he put New Jersey guard Drazen Petrovic on the bench with quick fouls to help Cleveland beat the Nets. He also spoke openly about the 2002 Los Angeles–Sacramento series and called himself the NBA's "go-to guy."

As it turned out, Denver didn't need the win after all; they locked up a spot in the playoffs before they got to San Antonio. In a twist of fate, it was the Spurs that ended up needing the win to have a shot at the division title, and Bavetta generously accommodated. In our pregame meeting, he talked about how important the game was to San Antonio and how meaningless it was to Denver, and that San Antonio was going to get the benefit of the calls that night. Armed with this inside information, I called Jack Concannon before the game and told him to bet the Spurs.

To no surprise, we won big. San Antonio blew Denver out of the building that evening, winning by 26 points. When Jack called me the following morning, he expressed amazement at the way an NBA game could be manipulated. Sobering, yes; amazing, no. That's how the game is played in the National Basketball Association.

Celtics beat the Lakers in '08 didn't they?

Lakers haven't beat the Celtics since what? 87?

08 was the first time the Lakers and Celtics even faced since 87, so that's a terrible argument. Why is it the Lakers' fault that the Celtics were irrelevant for 20 years and couldn't make the Finals?

So how have the Lakers completely dominated?

You said it yourself they are 2-2 in Finals in the modern era... which is the last 25 years...

Uhhh did you miss that 20 year period where the Celtics were a joke and the Lakers won titles? It isn't the Lakers' fault that the Celtics didn't make the Finals for 21 years. Oh, and the Allen Iverson thing...

Bump has gone Bill O, Glen Beck and Sean Hannity on us. He's left out the next paragraph of that excerpt, which states that other officials LOVED Iverson, and in one game where an official brought his son to meet Iverson, that same official made sure Iverson had an insane scoring night.

He's also left out the fact that the Lakers/Kings fuck-ups were to extend the series, not decide it. If you examine Game 5, you'll find equal outrage for the Lakers. If they were trying to decide the series, why not hand the Lakers game 5 just in case your plan fails in game 6? Instead they hand the Kings game 5, the Lakers game 6, and game 7 was called right down the middle.

Finally - all the free throws in the 2000 Portland game... when you have a moron for a head coach who instructs his players to foul hard instead of giving up baskets late in games, a team is gonna shoot a whole fuckload of FT's in the 4th.

The Lakers have 9 titles and 15 conference championships since 1980. That's almost 1/3 of all titles won since 1980, and they appeared in 50% of all NBA Finals played as well.

Kobe's had it work against him plenty of times, especially in the aftermath of the Shaq stuff and during the rape case. What people like Bump forget is that Kobe was one of the most HATED athletes in the world and basically had to bring his image all the way back to where it is now. Cleveland still has way too many holes and I laughed my ass off when people thought a 385 lb Shaq would be their missing piece.

And damn, Carmelo looked possessed last night. Bump, WTF happened to Aldridge? I guess his hand was sore from signing that massive extension, because he was fucking invisible in that game.

It was fucking ODEN man, if he hits those two FT's with 2 seconds left to play it's game.

Aldridge actaully played Melo well all game. I think he is just getting out the gate slow... Not even worried about him though... One thing you can tell already is that it doesn't matter if one main player has an off night... SOMEBODY is going to pick up the scoring.. That is evident.

I'm not worried about Aldridge at all... that 18 footer will start droppin and when it does....................

that's bullshit... Lakers are the most official pampered team ever...

You can't say AI gets even close to the pussy calls Kobe gets... Kobe is 6'6 and AI is 6'1 and AI has to get fucking hammered to get a call.. So I don't know what the hell you're talking about..

Hill, you are in denial about this whole Kobe shit... I know you have seen Iverson play more than a lot of times... I have seen him play.. I have seen Iverson take some fucking blow up elbows and not get a call.. And Iverson doesn't complain..!! Kobe will fucking cry like a PUSSY if a ref misses that patented touch foul.. 9 times out of 10..

It's almost like Kobe is saying "Come on REFFF!!!! This is part of the DEAL!!"

yes, every GM is saying "Thanks Moron" because they follow that up with "Thanks Moron, you just got a great NBA scorer who also gets EVERY call in the game"

it's all relative, Hill.

All players complain to the refs these days. Brandon Roy does that shit too. And you have floppy ass Fernandez on your team so don't talk about bitchyness.

Kobe is better than any player who's ever worn a Blazers uniform. Hurts, doesn't it?

Kobe is already a top 10 all time player. Hurts doesn't it?

AI isn't the all-world defender Kobe is. AI isn't as good a team mate either. Dude's been calling his own number since day one. He could never handle being on a team with talent. He's one of the toughest players in NBA history but I doubt he gets his team to the 2001 Finals if there'd been a single worthwhile Eastern Conference team. Chauncey for AI was an outright steal.

They have almost no perimeter shooting and overall their offense isn't really that impressive. They are athletic and play defense. Durant needs to be more effecient and Westbrook needs a lot of work on his shot. Jeff Green is not consistent enough for me but he does play defense.

Jeff Green is a beast..Westbrook needs a lot of work, not just his shot... He needs discipline.. Also, he needs to get guys involved more on offense. Part of the perimeter scoring is suffering because of him because he is so aggressive with the ball and he isn't moving it around like he should. I suppose that falls under discipline as well, though.

It's hilarious to listen to Bump bitch about calls. The Blazers got away with so much shit in the lane in this games. They took every liberty with Shaq in this series. Portland didn't rebound and played awful defense. Dunleavy employed Hack A Shaq which was a cheap ass strategy and they deserved to be bit in the ass by it. The refs also call several close ones against the Lakers during the 4th quarter (the blocking foul on Kobe, Horry's charge, etc.) so this isn't blatant at all.

People love touting free throw numbers, but the Blazers sent the Lakers to the line. These weren't ticky tack fouls.

I never want to hear bitching about this series again. You lost, bitch.

Wow, I forgot how many ugly ass shots the Blazers took in the 4th. How anyone could say the "refs" were the reason for this is beyond me. Bump, please, either stop being a homeristic Laker hater or stop posting dumb ass shit on this thread.

EDIT: Watching Sabonis hang off Shaq's back, then complain when the refs call a foul, is hilarious.

Man this brings back memories. Fuck Porkland.

EDIT: even further, for all the bitching about the Steve Smith foul, if he goes to the line and makes both, it's still a 2 point game and the Blazers are forced to foul. Definitely a nitpicky thing to blame.

raiderdude69
11-05-2009, 09:28 PM
Yep, Portland missed at least 4 or 5 shots that literally went in and out.. And others from close in that were just bricks.. 12 straight misses in that 15-0 run... Sure, there were some shitty calls going both ways, but we won, Blazers choked.. We got the title, they didn't.. End of story..

The Lakers were on the receiving end of more bad calls than the Blazers were, and fouls were still being called against LA with under a minute left (and a goaltend against Shaq too). That summer was so kickass. I was 16 and finally got a car and after my first girlfriend and I had an UGLY crash out months before, I started seeing the first super hot girl I ever dated. Metallica played the Coliseum and to this day, I'll never forget the gnarly food fight that lasted over an hour, and the beer booth getting knocked over and everyone getting free beer. The next day, ECW wrestling ran their only show ever in Los Angeles at the Grand Olympic. There were a retarded amount of good punk shows. The fuckin Dodgers took their usual spot in 2nd place though... lol.

That game was the start of all of it. The Downtown LA revival began that summer too. For the first time, people my age could look in the mirror and say "I'm from LA and that's a good thing." 9 1/2 years later our local swagger is better than its ever been.

Bump is still waiting for that elusive first "fan-life" ring.

Oh and Kobe hit some monster shots for a guy who did "nothing" when Shaq was on the team.

I will never argue that the Blazers choked, however, the refs DID put their whistles in their pockets much earlier than they should have...

At which point anybody could have said "Oh well, should have cleaned the glass beter.. or...not hacked a Shaq.."

Whatever, basketball is a game of momentum... a few "missed" calls that pretty much puts shit out of reach and you are starting to realize that you are fighting a battle that can't be won..

How do you think the Kings felt? or Dwight Howard in the finals last year? Put yourself in their shoes for second.. Do you think these players, who have witnessed some of the travesties that took place with the Lakers and favorable calls, haven't felt this way?

Let's separate the Lakers success from your Kobe mancrush for one second, Hill...

No matter what argument you bring to the table.... No matter what spin you put on it...

The FACTS show that the Lakers without Kobe were a BETTER team during the 3 peat... Without SHAQ they might not even make the playoffs...Yes DURING the 3-peat when Shaq was absent they were barely winning at a 50% clip...

Let's not bring up AFTER the Shaq tenure.... We all know how many turns it took to finally get it right.. Kobe needed the BEST help the NBA could offer... that alone makes him a second tier superstar when you compare him to some other champions.

So you can say "Ohhhh. well who cares that SHAQ battered the frontcourt for 3 1/2 quarters and maligned the D to collapse EVERY play"

"Who cares that this set Kobe up to hit a couple jumpers in clutch time??"

"Who cares that ANY 2 guard could have hammered the nail after being set up so lovely by the most physically dominant player in NBA history"

none of that matters.... it's just Kobes token jumpshot...

Kobe is one of the most overrated players in the history of the NBA...

Doyers y Esleigher
11-06-2009, 11:21 AM
I'd reply to this post, but I've realized you have a complete aversion to facts when it comes to basketball so there really is no point. Almost everything you posted is either incorrect or insane, and ignores all previous arguments where a lot of the myths you purport were already dispelled.

Find me one player that won a championship without marquee talent around him. It has never happened in the entire modern era of NBA basketball. EVER. I love how you talk about Dwight Howard like the refs did him and not Pau Gasol. Hell, the refs did everything they could to hand game 4 to the Magic and the Lakers still won.

Lakers were better WITHOUT Kobe? Okay dude, you are weird and obsessed and it skews your shit too much. This is why you could never be an objective sports commentator - when you don't like a team or player, you come up with some insane way of smearing them instead of giving the proper credit. You do it with the Yankees and you do it with Kobe/the Lakers.

Hold the fuck up.....

Look at what I said.....

During the 3peat.... the Lakers winning percentage was BETTER without Kobe than it was without Shaq.... SIGNIFICANTLY.....

That cannot be disproven....

In fact during the 3 peat era... the Lakers had a collectively better winning percentage with a Kobe-less lineup than they did overall...

And we aren't talking a sample size of 10 games Kobe missed 40 some odd games over that 3 year period...Kobe refused to feed the offense through Shaq..... it should have been fed through Shaq at ALL times and Kobe deviated many, many times...

Kobe has always been concerned with his own legacy.. He wanted to be the man rather than concede.. Shaq was the man bottom line. Kobe was second fiddle.... there is no argument...

And in the end, Kobes legacy still falls short... in his own era arguably.

Shaq had to be benched in the final minutes of games because teams were just fouling and sending him to the line. They had to stop doing it because Phil would pull Shaq and Kobe would take over the game. The Lakers won a bunch of games during the 3peat (regular season, playoff, and Finals games) because of Kobe in the 4th.

We led from start to finish. Granted, it was the 2nd leg of a back-to-back for the Suns. Bynum is a star.

That dunk by Shannon was spectacular! God's distribution of athletic ability leaves a lot to be desired.

Now if only we could shoot foul shots and get Artest to make those wide open 3's tonight in Denver.

Let's break this down by facets:

Rebounding - Tie

Scoring - Bynum

Blocks - Oden

Free throws - Bynum

Shooting out side the lane - Bynum

Post moves (back to basket) - Bynum

Jump balls - Oden

Bynum has to share boards with Odom and Gasol, so it's hard to tell.

Why isn't Odem playing more minutes? Foul trouble? If so, that's on him...

His fouls have gone down considerably.... the reason he plays less minutes is because we have Joel Pryz... who can also grab 10 boards in 15 minutes...

Keeps Oden fresh and ready to dominate the middle in the 4th...Make no mistake, if Nate played him 40 minutes his numbers would easily eclipse Bynums..

Not really worried about it.... Just means more minutes for Webster/Rudy

But Outlaw was nice in certain situations because he could give an opposing lineup that went big nightmares when he was plugged in @ the #4

and he can get that shot off on anybody in the league, so he was a nice luxury to have when the shot clock was running out..

But, this team is deep... Cunningham is a nice rookie that has some nice range for a power forward.. He might get more minutes behind Aldridge..

There are rumors of Kings trading Kenny Thomas (basically 9 million rotting on the bench) for Emeka Okafor.
Okafor is def. overpaid for what he is, but kings have been doing very good on the glass this season, and Okafor is a upgrade both on the glass and defensively over Hawes for sure.
Kings have the cap space and should pull the trigger on the trade

Not even. Getting rid of Jackson for nothing would have been a great trade.

Instead they got Raja Bell, a decent defender and shooter who can play efficiently in far less time than Jax got, and his contract expires this year. Radmonovic, he ain't that great, but he's a good shooting big who can stretch the court, although he isn't a dynamic player like Nelly usually likes. And his contract expires this year unless he exercises his player option I believe.

More expirers for the Dubs, so they can make the fans excited that they might actually make a move in the offseason, only to dump them all and waste it on some shitty players that add nothing to the roster.

And I agree with Don, Nelly is showcasing Monta right now to increase his value so he can dump him too.

If we could get rid of Nelly, too, then I might actually think the Warriors were serious about becoming some sort of legitimate franchise.

And that Artest/Ariza video is hilarious. Artest just got a + in my book.

Scary game, definitely not a confidence booster like it appeared to be in the 3rd... Rip City almost squandered a 20 point lead. But held on to win.

Agree somewhat.. Clippers have always been terrible and being from SoCal I still cannot believe anyone down there could really be a Clip fan when you got the Lakers in town.. But hey, to each his own..

And yes, the people of Seattle are still pissed about the Sonics, especially with the talent really showing through on that franchise now.. Durant COULDA been a fucking icon up here.. Main reason they're gone? Clayton Bennett is a fucking thief and a liar.. Even though I'm not a Sonic fan in the least, it still sucks ballsacks from hell that he took this team away.. It dont matter man, they still won 4 out of 5 during a rough road trip.. They worked out their line up..

This team is still off to their best start in 10 years and is on pace to better their 53 win mark from last season...

I don't see any reason to think why they can't beat any of those teams right now..

They did beat the Spurs and Thunder. They lost a fucking grueling OT game in Atlanta which was the last game (figures) of that 5 game road trip... And there were some VERY questionable calls in that game..

Blazers are in trouble...

Batum being out has hurt this team and it's ability to play perimeter D severely.. And losing Outlaw off the bench isn't helping much either..

And I really wish Aldridge would play some D, sometime.

Don't forget Fisher's big 3 the previous possession. He had a big offensive rebound late in the 4th as well.

Hope Pau's eye is alright. We stole that one, but I'll take it.

No shit.. Without Fish's 3, we don't even have a chance at the end.. Dude's clutch as fuck, not Kobe clutch, but a damn good 2nd banana clutch motherfucker to have on the court late.. Dude can suck gigantic ballsack for 47 minutes, but comes up huge when it counts..

Unfuckingbelievable how Kobe won that motherfucker though.. Lucky? Sure as shit, but yeah, I'll take it all day fucking long..

Ummmmmm, I think the Celtics would beg to differ

Bottom line... The Lakers have had the benefit of playing more home games (19) over the first 29 which is significantly more than 90% of the league... and a weak schedule to boot..

They have looked beatable against above average competition..

the average home games for the rest of the NBA 14.7

Lakers have had 19............

** I skewed the number a bit because there a couple teams that have only played 28 games and one who played 27..

the actual number was 14.4

You act like the Kings are the only team that's played the Lakers close. Hell dude, I went to Memphis last year and watched the fucking Grizzlies battle them to the wire (Kobe had to hit some big shots late in similar fashion). The fact that bad teams play the Lakers close is literally meaningless, as it was the same last year and the year before and look at the final results: a conference crown and an NBA title. In a 7 game series, a team like Sacramento would look fucking D-league against LA.

I know you small market, shit team fans love to nitpick the little things because little things are bigger deals when your team is good an average of 2 of every 10 years.

Notice how for any other team, the fact that they won the title last year would still mean bragging rights. The Lakers are still better than your shitty team and your only shit talk is "you might not be the best team in the league... so take that!" You still lose.

Tió Nook Nook

I know it's nit-picking. Fact of the matter is, kings had the game won and they couldn't close it out. thats why they aren't winning and probably won't make the playoffs this year.

i just find it funny that all the laker fans were celebrating like crazy after beating a shit team like the teams, as if they werent supposed to win that game anyway

Doyers y Esleigher
12-27-2009, 10:12 PM
Of course they were celebrating, they attended the game live and probably had shit talked to them for 4 quarters and 2 OT's. You know Kings fans were chirping when they had the lead in OT.

I don't care what a bunch of bandwaggo's from NorCal reveal about Laker fans. Also, why does it matter WHEN they chose to talk shit? And shouldn't you really only talk shit if you win? I know Kings fans can't do that because the most significant victory they have against the Lakers is in a series they lost, but damn.

And 40% Laker fans? No wonder you guys have "San Diego fan disease."

Do you...

- Use your sports team as an extension of your small market inferiority complex - CHECK

- Act as though a regular season against a rival is your championship game - CHECK

- Hang your hat on small victories - CHECK

- Brag about "almost winning" - CHECK

- Don't actually show up or care when the team falls off - CHECK

1. Valid
2. I will be completely stoked on them beating any team with a winning record.
3. Yes, this team was supposed to be terrible.
4. I wouldn't necessarily call it 'bragging' more like surprised that this team is almost playing .500 ball
5. I don't show up too often to Arco because of the price of tickets + parking, but I still try and watch as many games as I can.

The Kings gave another one to the Lakers. This time they only blew a 10 point lead in the 4th, though. So, we're at least narrowing our choke margin. I'd say in 3 years, we'll be down to only blowing 3 point leads against the Lakers. It's a work in progress.

So did I. He had to make both of them. That lofty pass from Gasol to Kobe had shades of that ball that rolled to Robert Horry. As soon as Kobe picked that thing up I knew it was over. It's a nightmare that keeps repeating itself. I swore off watching Lakers/Kings games long ago, but had a relapse last night, and payed for it.
