I'm writing the MLB preview for Fox Sports Radio. Ask me questions about your team and I'll break them down for you (I'm going to use pieces of my analysis here and on other forums in my report).

Will my Padres ever stop acting like a typical Diego team and give me something to be proud of again? I've been a fan forever but I don't follow it as much as football. I want all my teams to do good though. The Lakers are the only ones that keep my hopes up. lol

Offensively, the Dodgers have one true question mark: Matt Kemp. Andre Ethier and James Loney should continue to improve at a steady rate (as they have each year since 06), but Kemp has the tools to be better than both. Kemp is simply behind these guys baseball-wise. He's only been playing since high school and got drafted right after his senior year, so the intricacies of the game (intelligent base running, better outfield angles, hitting breaking pitches for power) are still coming to him. He won't have 600+ at-bats this year as long as Furcal stays healthy, so he'll need to raise his slugging percentage and HR rate. If he does this, the Dodgers are downright disgusting with the bats, especially in an offense-starved division.

The starting rotation has a lot of questions. Kuroda was effective, especially at home, but I don't think he's an ideal #1 starter. Billingsley gets a lot of crap for those poor performances against Philly but he was an outstanding #2 down the stretch. He's got to stop giving up too many walks. The similarity between Bills and Kuroda is they will typically cruise through innings 3-6 if they get through 1-2 unscathed.

The Kershaw situation can go one of two ways...

1. He'll crumble having been forced into the spotlight too early.
2. He'll settle in, knowing from day 1 he's in the rotation, and have a solid year.

We know he'll eventually be the staff ace (anyone who's seen his stuff couldn't disagree), it's just a matter of when.

The Padres don't project well this year, but they've got some talent. Adrian Gonzalez is the best first basemen in the National League next to Albert Pujols. If not for offense-killing PETCO Park, Gonzalez could easily be a 45+ home run hitter (he hit 36 last year). The Padres don't have much else on offense, especially in the outfield.

I predict Jake Peavy will be dealt this year, possibly even by mid-May if the Padres look to fall out of contention early. Ownership cannot afford to keep his contract on the books, and several contenders would give SD a decent package of prospects (which the Padres desperately need) for a legit #1 starter with a multi-year deal already in place. The only way roadblock between Peavy and a trade to a contender would be injury, which Peavy has a history of. Speaking of pitcher health, I'm interested in seeing if Chris Young can hold up and show the same promise he did back in 2007.

That said, the Padres simply don't have the talent to compete with Arizona and San Francisco's outstanding rotations, and LA's potent offense.

I still follow baseball but not nearly as much as I used to. I've been a Blue Jays fan for 20 years but they haven't even made the fuckin playoffs since winning back to back titles in '92 and '93. Halladay is a workhorse pitcher, you know he's always gonna show up, but nothing much else is behind him. And now they have the damn Devil Rays to compete against too, I smell another 4th place finish in the AL East.

LOL@ the sorry ass Padres. Not only do they lose their championship game (Opening Day w/ Peavy was their only chance to play in front of a sold out house and actually win this year), but their fans got out-drawn by Dodgers fans in their own freaking ballpark. Biggest crowd in PETCO history and it looked like the only Padres fans were in the season seats around home plate.

How about my Indians MrHill?

Here's some notes I made on them.

Cleveland Indians
Will Carl Pavano stay healthy? If not, the Indians rotation lacks the depth to replace him. Cliff Lee and Fausto Carmona will need to carry the load and keep the Indians competitive in a tough division.
Speaking of health, can Kerry Wood stay on the field and close games? If he can, the Tribe should have a solid bullpen.
The Indians have talent all over their lineup. Grady Sizemore will lead off again, despite 30+ home run power and an .876 OPS last year. This puts C/1B Victor Martinez in position to provide middle of the order power.
Will Asdrubal Cabrera continue his hot hitting? He had an .862 OPS in the 2nd half of last season. At 22, he’s got plenty of time to improve, but he may become a vital piece this season at the bottom of the order.

What's up with Eithier batting clean-up and why is Martin hitting before Loney? Martin takes too many good pitches and gets in the hole. He needs to be more aggressive at the plate. I liked Boggs' theory about taking the first pitch, but damn man. Watching Russell hit is like having teeth pulled...

Are you guys serious about Russell Martin? We're FOUR games into the season. Comparing him to Jordan fucking Farmar? Seriously?

Russ OBP'ed .385 last year. His power dropped after the All-Star break but he played unbelievable defense. FanGraphs estimates his actual value (they have a system for comparing runs generated/saved +- and determining an actual dollar value for a player) at $21.8 MILLION DOLLARS. He shouldn't be hitting 5th to begin with, but that's Joe Torre's fault. IMO, Russ is a #2 hitter.

im not a numbers and statistics guy with baseball but watching just about every game Russell really hasnt done much at the plate for quite sometime....His OBP is probably high due to walks....What are his numbers with Runners on ??? You really cant expect all that much offense from an everyday catcher but i just had high hopes for him...Maybe im just being over critical ....

Numbers and statistics are pretty crucial. Yes his OBP is high because of walks... what is wrong with that? He's a giant + on defense because the ball doesn't get past him. He had a bad year throwing out runners but he's still young. His power does drop mid-season but it does this for most catchers, but when his power drops his OBP stays high so he's not a liability. I really don't see the problem. Torre just needs to stop hitting him in the 4-5 spot.

I cringe when he's at the plate with runners on base. He's been a double play machine/inning ender for some time now. I could care less what his OBP is.
I love what Martin does behind the plate. He might be the best catcher in the game. Torre should either move him up to 2nd or down to 8th...

Martin hit into 18 double plays last year. His DP% (% of potential double play situations that end in double plays) was 12.9%, good for a NETDP of 2.95 (which means Martin produces 2.95 more double plays per season than the average player with the same number of opportunities). That's by no means stellar, but it's not terrible considering James Loney hit into 29 double plays, had a DP% of 18.9% and a NETDP of 11.11.

I agree that Martin should be hitting 2nd or 8th. That said, you should care what his OBP is because he's getting on base way more often than the average MLB catcher. The wear and tear on a catchers' body doesn't allow them to hit for power for 162 games. With some exceptions (Piazza, these days McCann), catchers become contact/singles hitters after the All Star break so they're going to hit into more DP's. The difference is Russell is also taking a lot of pitches and drawing a lot of walks. He'll give the team opportunities to score runs, where other catchers will be OBPing .310 and turning into automatic outs.

Ultimately, I blame Joe Torre for expecting Martin to be a #4 or #5 hitter, and for starting him in too many games last year.

Martin had a nice base knock on Monday. Moving him back in the line-up will do him/us good. Great point on him wearing 'the tools of ignorance'. In case you're not familiar with that phrase, my Grandpa used to get on me about being a Catcher in little league. I was a rare left handed Catcher, and loved playing that position! I was damned good at it too (not trying to sound arrogant, but...). Not very many dudes tried to run on me.

Trust me bro, I respect the hell out of what Russell does behind the plate.

Interesting fact for you, my Great Uncle on my Mom's side was a backup catcher for the Louisville Colonels (now the Reds).

Don't read too much into the Padres' success. It's April. Like I've said before, as long as you don't go 5-20 in April you're still in the race. I don't see them winning like this all year.

An article done by a Boston writer a couple years ago said Manny will take a strike 3 in April in a division game so the same pitcher gives him the same pitch in September.

Actually to be honest I don't think they'll win 80 games TOPS. But it's probably more like 70-75 wins and a 4th place finish in the AL East.

Fine dude, if you REALLY want to be an Angels fan, do it. Just don't attend an Angels game, then come on here saying "wow, I went to a baseball game today, but nobody knew about baseball. Everyone was there to watch their kids play with tonka trucks and flip out at the fireworks. At some point, we sang 'Build Me Up Buttercup' because the crowd's attention span for 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame' only lasted one verse. For some reason, the only time they cared about the game on the field was when some video of a monkey flipping out to nu metal music played on the big board. I also thought I was going to see the Los Angeles Angels, but Los Angeles isn't like I expected. There are tons of strip malls, everything is a shade darker from all the factory smog, everyone my age drives a raised pick-up truck and worships Del Taco, and the one black person I saw the whole time rolled down his window and said 'hey man, how do I find the freeway?'"

Gotta agree wholeheartedly bro.. Grew up in MoVal/Riverside, used to go to TONS of Angel games, just to see the other teams/check out the OC chicks.. Been a Dodger fan since birth though, so I kinda felt dirty hitting up their digs all those times, but hey, my team's got rings so fuck 'em..

But yeah, they were averaging MAYBE 20K even in SEPTEMBER of 2002, then EVERYONE became an Angel fan.. Even my bros who I KNEW were diehard since the Don Baylor/Bobby Grich/Rod Carew days were getting pissed that they had to fight over playoff tickets with the bandwagon fucks.. And I went to high school and played Pony League with Percival so I had a personal dislike for that fucker.. ONLY reason I rooted for them in the Series was 'cause they were playing the hated GIANTS..

I watch the Mariners quite a bit up here, but I'll ALWAYS be Dodger Blue, regardless.. Good to have the nice big lead in the NL West so far, but alot of ball left to be played.. I do not like how we have played throughout the season, the fact that we have had so many injuries has also hurt us as well. I'm really starting to miss K-Rod, Brian Fuentes has been average at best. I really want to see us hit more long balls, relying on the small ball & good pitching alone won't do shit because World Series-caliber teams are good at long ball, small ball, base running, and have a great pitching staff, etc.

Yea at the end of the day they ended up losing him and Tex and got Fuentes and Abreu. Angels are back at the bottom in HR's hit this year.

Nah, that's been a general baseball philosophy of mine for a long time. The save is the most overblown stat in baseball next to batting average. You know who lead the NL in saves last year? Brian Wilson. He also had an ERA over 4 and put baserunners on like it was going out of style, but with 2 and 3 run leads he was able to get out of the jam more often than not.

Obviously you love K-Rod coming out of the pen to shut someone down, but IMO, closers like him tend to get paid more than the amount of wins they'll actually create for their team.

I agree somewhat... when you have a closer who is as automatic as K Rod then I think they are worth every penny. How crucial was Mariano to the Yanks..... even in 1 run games u knew it was over when he came in

K-Rod isn't as automatic as everyone says. He's gotten a lot of 2 and 3 run saves and blown his share of tied games. Guys like Mo are way more rare than people think. There are only a handful of guys I'd trust in literally ANY 1 run/high leverage situation. A lot of closers are just stat compilers. I don't believe Trevor Hoffman belongs in the Hall of Fame.

I agree but the Angels were offering him 33 million while he signed for 37. It would have been in their best interest to keep him knowing how successful he was during his tenure there. Not as automatic as Rivera was in his prime but still one of the best closers.

3 years at 37 million is too much considering the bottom dropped out of the relief pitching market really fast. It's possible to get similar value out of a closer and spend your money elsewhere. The Mets are a little different because they have payroll room and didn't have the kind of questions offensively that the Angels did.

Closers are important but it's not wise to throw big money at them. The Blue Jays gave B.J. Ryan $47 million after the 2005 season and right now that move looks idiotic. Scott Downs who probably makes 1/10th what Ryan makes has been doing a bang-up job in his spot.

I agree with those who feel paying huge $$ to closers is an un-wise move. I do love Papelbon and his $6.5 million is pushing the limit of what I would pay for a closer. He's not automatic and has struggled at times this year, but he is that type of player who does well when the pressure is on. He can also pitch more than a 3-out inning, he's pitched 2-3 innings before when needed. Letting K-Rod walk for the money was IMO, the right move. They may not have replaced him yet, but that doesn't mean keeping him and paying him all that money would've been the right move.

BTW, how 'bout the Sox sweeping the Yankees again.

Papelbon doesn't look good this year. His fastball still has some zip but his stuff isn't moving much and he's relying too much on that splitter (which has lost some of its action). A great closer can literally be reduced to nothing in 2-3 years, which is why there's 0 point in paying them high unless they are absolutely ridiculous.

I've met a couple of nice Red Sox fans but the majority of them are just arrogant, obnoxious douche bags who want everyone to bow down on their knees before their team with their annoying Boston accent while shoving their fat faces full of their New England Clam Chowder. I live in Los Angeles, 35 minutes north of Anaheim. Safe to say I've met more Angels fans than you have, and been to more Angels games in my life. And no, your average Angel fan is clueless when it comes to the actual sport of baseball.

You cannot possibly compare Red Sox fans with Angels fans. As annoying as Boston fans are, they packed Fenway for 86 years while their team suffered some of the worst defeats in MLB history. What were Angels fans doing? Not existing. Prior to 2002, Angels games were a way for East Coast and Mid-West transplants living in LA to come see their favorite AL team. My father and I have gone to the Yankees game down there almost every year and it was a Yankee home game, and the same went for Boston, Cleveland, etc. The Dodgers and Angels might as well have played 6 in Los Angeles instead of 3 here and 3 there since it was all Dodgers fans anyway.

Forbes Magazine rated Angels fans as the worst fanbase in professional baseball.

Plus, you'll never understand the LA/OC thing. This really isn't a matter of two teams feuding over a city. The Dodgers own LA, have always owned LA, and will always own LA. The whole "battle for LA" thing is really just media hype, and that hype annoys the shit out of us. The Angels don't even play here and the Dodgers play in the middle of the city. LA is a big liberal city and OC is conservative and suburban. LA has a history of cultural movements and OC was once the California HQ of the Ku Klux Klan (and still has the largest concentration of neo-nazi and extremist right wingers in the United States, by the numbers). LA fans are insane and rowdy while Angel fans are usually tame. It's just a night and day thing that breeds a lot of dislike. It isn't really a baseball feud the way a Dodgers/Giants feud is.

IMO that's just going to smash Russ' confidence. Part of the reason Ausmus is playing well is his backup role. I don't see him playing well at all if his playing time got extended and he had to catch 4-5 straight games on 40 year old legs. If he's extended at all, we're going to get run on left and right.

And Martin's defense behind the plate, and ability to communicate well with pitchers, is too valuable. I'm not worried about him long-term, he was in the wrong role to begin with IMO.

Dude, you may think finding an Angel fans where you are before 2002 is impossible, but the exact same thing can be said for finding a Red Sox fan OUTSIDE of Boston before 2004, before they broke "The Curse of The Bambino". When the Red Sox did break their so-called "curse", millions of people decided to jump on the bandwagon of the Red Sox and act like they are God's Gift to baseball and that everyone else they meet in stadiums across the country at every Red Sux road game do the same as well.

Angel fans are more laid back, we don't believe in acting like pompous-asses & we don't carry around a God's Gift attitude like Red Sux fans do. If you were a fan of any team other than the Dodgers and have been to a baseball game where the Red Sox were the road team you'd see what I mean. What do I care about Red Sox fans outside of Boston? Every team has bandwagon fans dude. You know how many Raiders fans there'd be outside of California if we won the Super Bowl? If the Red Sox ever fall off (not likely given their GM/front office is probably the best in MLB), the people of Boston will support them.

No one gave a fuck about the Angels before 2002, in Anaheim or outside of it.

If you were a fan of any team other than the Dodgers and have been to a baseball game where the Red Sox were the road team you'd see what I mean. I've been to lots of games with the Red Sox as the road team. I've seen them in Oakland, Anaheim, and last year they played the Dodgers in the LA Coliseum in front of 100,000 people. I know how annoying their fans are, but I'm not going to judge true Boston fans based on the bandwagoners that exist outside of Boston, because the same shit happens with every great team like that.

That laid back attitude you're describing has nothing to do with approach to the game and everything to do with the fact that most people in the stadium just found out what a baseball was a few years ago. Sorry dude, but the Angels fanbase is a giant freaking bandwagon, the stadium might as well be made of wood and have wheels. I'd rather be in Fenway Park with a bunch of passionate Red Sox fans who actually know baseball than I would in Angel Stadium watching people sit with their hands folded until the Rally Monkey tells them to cheer.

The three most loyal fan bases in baseball belong to the Yankees, Cardinals and Dodgers. Forget the out of town bandwagoners, these teams are staples of the city they play in. When you go to Yankee Stadium and hear people calling for a bunt up the first base line because the pitcher is left handed and the 1B is playing slightly back, you can't help but smile as someone who loves the game. Same goes with St. Louis, where they'll cheer the opposing outfielder if he makes a nice catch, or Los Angeles, where they draw 3 1/2 million in losing seasons. Those are true fans of baseball, not the god damn Angels.

They have enough die hards to fill the stadium out when they're not playing great. IMO, that's one of the big keys to a great fan base in any city. Plus Yankee fans in NY know the intricacies of the American League game really well.

Your right Hill, Wrigley is sold-out for just about every game. The waiting list for season tickets is approximately 20 years. The season ticket holders pass them down through their family before thinking of getting rid of them. Every so often you hear on tv about a senior Cubs fan who only a few years old when the Cubbies last won the world series back in 1908. Yet you can go over to the south side which is about 30 minutes away and walk right-up to the White Sox box office and purchase season tickets. And the funny thing is the Sox won the world series in '05, and they still can't sell out games unless it's against the Cubs or Red Sox or Yankees.

Why are the Dodgers winning games? Our best players are putting up awful numbers and our offense is being carried by Matt Kemp, Juan Pierre and Orlando Hudson. Our starters rarely go more than 5 2/3 innings. Our two best middle relievers are on pace for 100 innings each. This team is literally defying every conventional baseball theory. Teams that win like this almost always hit a wall, but Manny's back in 9 games so that's not really possible.

Don't look now though, the Rockies and Giants are over .500. Don't ask how the Rockies won 16 out of 17 by replacing Clint Hurdle with Jim Tracy, I have no answer.

Oh, and if the Angels fired Mike Scioscia tomorrow I'd take tomorrow's odds that they were going to win the American League, possibly World Series.

Pretty crazy when put in to perspective like that...Since you mentioned Manny, I think I might catch a game here while he is in town.

There are quite a few around the LBC. I'm assuming it's due to our close proximity to Angel Stadium.

Fuck the Angels.

LBC is so close to OC that it makes sense. Once you get past the border it's pretty much all Dodgers.

Good game Dodger fans. Seeing as you took two out of 3 in Anaheim and we took 2 out of 3 in your house. I guess we are even this year for this annual get-together.

See you next year.

What no confidence in a Dodger/Angel WS? I know my Dodgers will be there. BTW Trust me I have brought up the dumb ass rally monkey thing during a meeting and I always got fired for telling them to get rid of it. :D No but seriously it needs to go it's so 2002.

I try to be realistic with my team. I'll bash them on areas where they deserve it. We are an incosistent team, injuries haven't helped us either. Angel management seemed "satisfied" with what we had because it led us to 100 wins last season but 100 wins don't mean shit when you get your ass handed to you in the playoffs where it really counts. A consistently winning team never rests on its laurels with the players they had from the previous year, they try and sign free agents to help fill the void, especially if they fit their system. They also put the best effort possible to re-sign key players, before this season started & we did NOTHING.

What were the Angels going to do? Pay $200 million for Tex and overpay for K-Rod? Moreno's money is tied directly to the economy so that wasn't happening. The Angels aren't in a bad position right now and clearly you haven't paid attention to the wealth of talent in their minor league system. Mike Scioscia's bullshit managing is what kills that team.

I'd hate an Angels/Dodgers World Series right now. How do you sell something as an intense rivalry when every game in Dodger Stadium would be nothing but Dodgers fans and every game in Anaheim would be 50/50? The story of the series would be the Dodgers looking to reclaim history and the Angels "battle for legitimacy." Furthermore, if the Dodgers clinched in Anaheim, Angel Stadium would probably get burned to the ground. I'm serious about that.

IMO, it's a much better World Series in 2019.

Found out today I will be going to the Dodger's Giants game home opening weekend for the Raiders. Saturday night basesball I've heard about the rivalry before but always wanted to check out the ballpark in SF.

With the way the Dodgers and Giants are playing, that could have some serious implications!

How insane would it be if the Giants won the Wild Card and the Dodgers and Giants made it to the NLCS?

Don

Holy shit is Tim Lincecum an outstanding pitcher. He torched my A's last night like he owned the place. 12 strike outs and they shut down two consecutive innings with the bases loaded on double plays..

The one worry I'd have as a Giants fan is the offense. You can only win for so long when you're ranked 28th in runs scored, tied for dead last in home runs, dead last in team OBP, and 28th in team SLG.

Yeah, their offense is no bueno. I just cant get over how a shaggy headed 185 lb. kid can be so damn crafty on the mound.

That would raise our rivalry up 10 notches. As if it weren't heated enough.

I hope it happens! SoCal vs. NoCal for the rite to represent the NL in the Series. Shit...

Mike Napoli is just amazing, anybody see the BLAST he made yesterday? That ball was crushed! With the exception of the Dodgers, the N.L. West is weak. We've dominated them. But it will be even sweeter if we can do the same for the teams in our league, especially the Texas Rangers.

Brian Fuentes may have had a rough start with us but lately he has been unscored upon in his last 6 outings. Oh, & he has a major-league best 19 saves.

So not only have Fuentes & the Angels been hot, but the Texas Rangers have not. Looks like the annual summer swoon has come early in Texas. :D Consecutive losses for them has allowed us to retake the lead in the division from them as tje Ramgers jad beem averaging only 3 runs in an 11-game stretch earlier this month and had been batting .218 in June.

I'm loving it!:dj::cheers:

Small sample size statistics are meaningless and so are save counts.

The Angels should take that division without problem. Texas will be done by August.
